HITRUST Certification in Philippines
Philippine teams now process claims, code diagnoses and answer patient calls for a large share of the US healthcare system. The payers and providers behind that work want more than a signed contract. HITRUST certification in Philippines gives them independent, tested evidence that their protected health information is safe in your hands.
Univate Global prepares Philippine organizations for HITRUST assessments under the HITRUST CSF. We help you pick the right assessment, define a sensible scope and close control gaps. Then we organize the evidence an assessor will test. We do not perform the assessment ourselves, which keeps the result independent and credible to your clients.
Our work suits a 40-seat medical coding team in Iloilo as well as a multi-site revenue cycle operation across Metro Manila and Cebu. The approach stays the same. We build controls around your real workflows and evidence your staff can produce on demand. You also get a plan your team can sustain after the certificate arrives.

HITRUST Certification in the Philippines for Healthcare BPOs, Health-Tech Firms and IT Providers
HITRUST began in healthcare, and that is still where most Philippine demand comes from. However, the framework is not limited to one sector. Any organization that handles sensitive data for US healthcare clients may be asked for it.
Healthcare BPOs make up the largest group. Medical billing and coding, claims processing, prior authorization, eligibility checks and revenue cycle teams all touch protected health information every shift. Their US clients are covered entities under HIPAA, and many now name HITRUST in vendor requirements.
Health-tech and SaaS companies come next. Firms building patient portals, telehealth platforms, practice management tools or analytics products for US customers often hit HITRUST questions during enterprise sales. A certification can turn a long security review into a short document exchange.
IT and managed service providers form a third group. Help desks, cloud operations teams and software developers supporting US hospitals or insurers sit inside their clients’ risk perimeter. They are increasingly assessed the same way as the clinical outsourcers.
Other organizations join the list as their client base grows. These include transcription and medical scribe services, telehealth support centers, pharmacy support desks and data annotation firms working on health records. Local hospitals and universities with US research partners also ask about HITRUST, although fewer pursue it today.
Size is rarely the barrier people expect. A boutique coding firm with a single client can scope narrowly and pursue an e1. A large multi-site operation can take on an r2 covering several delivery centers. The framework scales with the scope you choose.
How HITRUST Certification Works in the Philippines
HITRUST is a US-based organization that maintains the HITRUST CSF, a certifiable security and privacy framework. The CSF harmonizes requirements from HIPAA, ISO 27001, NIST, PCI DSS and other sources into one control set. You assess once against the CSF and can then show coverage of several frameworks at the same time.
The current release is CSF v11. Version 11.8.0 took effect on 7 May 2026, and new e1 and i1 assessments must use it. An r2 assessment may use any current v11 version. Version 11.8.0 adds mappings to the OWASP Top 10 for LLM applications and refreshes the PCI DSS v4.0.1 and SOC 2 mappings.
Three parties are involved, and their roles are kept separate. A consultant such as Univate helps you prepare: readiness, scoping, remediation and evidence. A HITRUST Authorized External Assessor organization then tests your controls and submits the results through HITRUST’s MyCSF platform. HITRUST performs quality assurance on that work and issues the certification. Univate is not an Authorized External Assessor.

Why Philippine Businesses Invest in HITRUST Certification
Contracts drive most decisions. US payers and large provider groups manage hundreds of vendors and cannot audit each one in detail. A HITRUST certificate gives their third-party risk teams an independently tested, quality-checked result they already know how to read. For a Philippine vendor, that often means fewer questionnaires and faster onboarding.
Competition matters too. Philippine healthcare outsourcers compete with providers in India, Latin America and the United States itself. When a buyer shortlists several capable vendors, HITRUST certification in the Philippines is a clear way to stand out. It shows that security has been tested by an independent assessor and reviewed by HITRUST.
There is also a practical reason. Many outsourcers already answer dozens of client security questionnaires each year, often with slightly different wording. A single HITRUST result, shared through HITRUST’s own reporting tools, gives every client the same tested answer. That frees compliance staff for actual risk work.
HITRUST, HIPAA and the Philippine Data Privacy Act
Philippine healthcare BPOs are bound by HIPAA through Business Associate Agreements with their US clients. At the same time, the Data Privacy Act of 2012 (Republic Act 10173) applies to personal data processed locally. The National Privacy Commission oversees it. HITRUST does not replace either law. However, its CSF maps directly to HIPAA requirements and gives you a structured way to show the security measures both laws expect. One set of HITRUST evidence can therefore answer US contract clauses and support your local privacy program.
HITRUST Requirements: What Your Organization Will Need
Your first decision is which assessment to pursue, because each one sets a different level of effort and assurance. HITRUST offers three validated assessment types:
- e1 (Essentials, 1-year): covers foundational cyber hygiene and suits smaller vendors or a first step with a new client.
- i1 (Implemented, 1-year): tests a broader set of leading-practice controls and fits mid-sized vendors facing tougher client reviews.
- r2 (Risk-based, 2-year): the most comprehensive option, tailored to your risk factors, with an interim assessment in the middle of the cycle.
Whichever level you choose, the assessor will look for the same building blocks. You need a clearly defined scope that names the systems, facilities and teams handling client data. You also need written policies and procedures, controls that operate day to day, and evidence that proves it. Typical evidence includes access reviews, training records, vulnerability scan results, incident logs, vendor agreements and change tickets.
HITRUST also looks at maturity, not only at whether a control exists. For r2 especially, assessors score whether each requirement is written down, implemented and, where applicable, measured and managed. Policies that nobody follows score poorly, and so do strong practices that were never documented.
You will also need people and time. HITRUST work runs through the MyCSF platform, so someone must own the assessment object and keep it current. Projects move fastest when a senior sponsor approves scope early. A small working group from IT, compliance, HR and operations should then own the tasks alongside our consultants.
Our Process for HITRUST Certification in the Philippines
Our process for HITRUST certification in Philippines follows six stages. Each stage ends with a clear deliverable, so your leadership always knows how close you are to the validated assessment.
Step 1 – Readiness Review and Assessment Selection
We start by understanding your clients, contracts and current security posture. We review what your US customers are asking for and recommend e1, i1 or r2 accordingly. Sometimes the right answer is to start with e1 or i1 and move to r2 later.
Step 2 – Scoping and MyCSF Setup
Next, we define what is in scope: applications, cloud environments, office sites, shared services and outsourced functions. A tight scope lowers effort without weakening assurance. We also check where client data flows to third parties, such as cloud hosts or billing platforms, since those relationships affect the controls in scope. For r2, we help you answer the risk factor questions that tailor your control requirements. We then help set up the assessment in MyCSF.
Step 3 – Gap Assessment Against the CSF
We compare your current controls with the CSF requirements that apply to your scope. You receive a prioritized gap list showing what is already in place, what is partly done and what is missing. Each gap comes with a recommended fix and an owner. We also flag which gaps are quick wins and which need budget, new tools or vendor changes. That helps leadership plan remediation realistically around client deadlines.
Step 4 – Remediation and Evidence Collection
We help you write or update policies and procedures, then put the missing controls into practice. Typical work covers multi-factor authentication, logging and monitoring, encryption, backup testing, incident response and vendor oversight. Throughout this stage, we build an evidence library mapped to each requirement, so nothing has to be gathered in a rush later.
Step 5 – Validated Assessment and HITRUST QA
Your chosen Authorized External Assessor tests the controls through document review, interviews, observation and sampling. The assessor then submits the completed assessment through MyCSF. HITRUST runs its quality assurance review and may raise questions before issuing the certification. We prepare your team for fieldwork and help you respond to assessor and QA queries promptly.
Step 6 – Interim Assessment and Renewal Cycle
An e1 or i1 certification lasts one year, so the cycle begins again each year. An r2 certification lasts two years, with an interim assessment at the midpoint to confirm controls are still working. We can support ongoing monitoring, internal reviews and evidence refreshes so each renewal builds on the last.
Typical HITRUST Timeline for Philippine Organizations
The table below shows indicative durations for a single-site organization pursuing an i1 assessment. An e1 is usually shorter, while an r2 usually takes longer.
| Phase | Key activities | Indicative duration | Main output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Readiness and selection | Client requirement review, posture check, choice of e1, i1 or r2 | 1–2 weeks | Assessment recommendation and project plan |
| Scoping and setup | Define systems, sites and teams; r2 risk factors; MyCSF setup | 1–2 weeks | Scope statement and assessment object |
| Gap assessment | Compare current controls with applicable CSF requirements | 2–4 weeks | Prioritized gap register |
| Remediation and evidence | Policies, technical fixes, training, evidence library | 2–5 months | Operating controls with mapped evidence |
| Validated assessment and QA | Assessor testing, MyCSF submission, HITRUST QA review | Several weeks to a few months, including scheduling | HITRUST e1, i1 or r2 certification |
Most organizations that start with reasonable security basics complete an i1 journey in five to nine months. A first r2 for a multi-site operation can take longer, especially when remediation involves new tooling or major process changes.
HITRUST Certification in the Philippines: Cost and Timeline
The cost of HITRUST certification in the Philippines depends on what you assess and how ready you are. A flat price quoted before scoping cannot reflect your real effort. These four factors shape the final figure.
Assessment Type
An e1 covers the smallest set of requirements, an i1 a larger set, and an r2 the largest and most tailored set. Each step up adds preparation work, assessor testing time and evidence volume.
Scope Size and Number of Sites
Every in-scope application, cloud environment and facility adds controls to test. A coding team on one floor in Ortigas needs far less assessor time than a three-site operation spread across Metro Manila, Cebu and Davao.
Current Maturity and Existing Frameworks
Organizations that already hold ISO 27001 certification or a SOC 2 report usually have much of the groundwork done. Their policies, risk processes and evidence habits carry over. Teams starting with informal practices will need more remediation time.
Consulting, Assessor and HITRUST Fees
Your total budget has three separate parts. Consulting covers readiness, remediation and evidence support. The Authorized External Assessor charges for testing and submission. HITRUST charges its own fees for MyCSF access and the assessment itself.
When choosing an assessor, confirm the firm appears on HITRUST’s list of Authorized External Assessors. Ask about its experience with offshore delivery centers and remote testing, since much of the fieldwork may run across time zones. Once we understand your scope, we provide a clear, itemized quote for our part of the work.
On timing, the biggest variable is usually internal. How fast your team reviews drafts, fixes gaps and supplies evidence matters more than any external step. If your clients also ask about HIPAA itself, see our HIPAA page for how the two programs fit together.
Benefits of HITRUST Certification for Philippine Businesses
HITRUST is demanding, which is exactly why clients trust it. Organizations that complete it usually see gains in sales, operations and governance well beyond the certificate itself.
Shorter Vendor Reviews With US Healthcare Clients
Many US payers and providers accept a HITRUST certification in place of their own lengthy questionnaires. That can shorten onboarding for new accounts and simplify annual reviews for existing ones. Your account teams spend less time on security paperwork and more on service delivery.
One Assessment, Several Frameworks
Because the CSF harmonizes HIPAA, ISO 27001, NIST and PCI DSS requirements, one well-run program covers a lot of ground. If you already pursue ISO 27001, much of that work feeds straight into HITRUST, and the reverse is also true.
A Clear Path From e1 to r2
The three assessment levels let you grow assurance in step with your client base. A young health-tech firm can start with e1, then move to i1 and r2 as larger contracts arrive. Each stage builds on evidence you already hold.
Stronger Protection for Patient Data
The remediation work closes real gaps, such as shared accounts on production floors, unmanaged endpoints or untested backups. That lowers the chance of a breach involving patient records. It also prepares your team to respond calmly if an incident does occur. Clear escalation paths and tested backups matter in a country where typhoons and power interruptions can disrupt operations.
Readiness for AI-Driven Healthcare Work
Philippine teams increasingly use AI tools in coding, summarization and customer support. CSF v11.8.0 maps to the OWASP Top 10 for LLM applications, and HITRUST also offers an AI security certification. Building these controls now positions you well as clients start asking how AI touches their data.

Why Philippine Companies Choose Univate for HITRUST
Univate has consulted more than 300 enterprises across cybersecurity and compliance. Our team has logged over 1,000 audit man-days in critical infrastructure and regulated industries. Our consultants include CISA-certified professionals and specialists with decades of experience in security, risk and governance. From our Philippine office in Makati, we understand both local delivery models and the expectations of US healthcare buyers.
We prepare you; we do not assess you. That separation matters in HITRUST, where independence between consultant and assessor protects the value of your certification. Our job is to get you ready, help you answer assessor and QA questions, and keep your program current between cycles.
Many of our clients face several client demands at once. We design your HITRUST program so its controls also support SOC 2, PCI DSS and NIST-aligned reviews. This lets you meet each new request without starting from zero.
HITRUST Certification Services Across the Philippines
We provide HITRUST certification in Philippines support nationwide through hybrid delivery. Workshops, gap reviews and evidence checks run remotely. On-site visits are planned for key milestones, such as scoping walkthroughs, pre-assessment reviews and assessor fieldwork preparation.
In Metro Manila, we work with organizations in Makati, Bonifacio Global City, Ortigas Center, Quezon City, the City of Manila and Alabang. These hubs host many healthcare BPOs, health-tech firms and IT service providers serving US clients.
Beyond the capital, we support healthcare outsourcing and technology teams in Cebu, Davao, Clark and Pampanga, Iloilo and Bacolod. We also work with organizations in Cagayan de Oro and Baguio. Each region has its own talent pools and delivery models. However, every site receives the same structured preparation for HITRUST certification in the Philippines. That applies equally to a Davao coding floor and a Clark cloud operations team.

HITRUST Certification in Philippines: Frequently Asked Questions
What does HITRUST certification in Philippines involve?
It involves preparing your controls against the HITRUST CSF, then completing a validated assessment. An Authorized External Assessor tests your controls and submits the results through MyCSF. HITRUST reviews the work through quality assurance and issues the certification.
Should we start with e1, i1 or r2?
It depends on what your clients ask for and how mature your controls are. Smaller vendors often start with e1 or i1. Organizations handling large volumes of patient data for major payers are frequently asked for r2. We review your contracts before recommending a level.
Can Univate issue our HITRUST certificate?
No. HITRUST issues the certification after an Authorized External Assessor completes the assessment and HITRUST finishes its quality assurance. Univate is a consultant. We prepare you for that process and support you through it.
Is HITRUST the same as HIPAA compliance?
No. HIPAA is a US law, while HITRUST is a certifiable framework that includes HIPAA requirements among many others. A HITRUST certification is strong evidence of HIPAA-aligned security, but you still need your Business Associate Agreements and HIPAA-specific processes.
Which version of the CSF should we use?
New e1 and i1 assessments must use CSF v11.8.0, which took effect on 7 May 2026. An r2 assessment may use any current v11 version. We usually recommend v11.8.0 so you benefit from the latest mappings.
How long does a HITRUST certification last?
An e1 or i1 certification is valid for one year. An r2 certification is valid for two years, with an interim assessment in the middle of that period to confirm controls are still operating.
Can we include only our Philippine delivery center in scope?
Yes, provided the scope matches what your clients need assurance on. Many vendors start with the site and systems that handle client health data. They then widen the scope in later cycles as new services or locations are added.
Will our ISO 27001 or SOC 2 work help?
Yes. The CSF maps to ISO 27001 and refreshed SOC 2 criteria, so existing policies, risk assessments and evidence can often be reused. The assessor still tests HITRUST requirements directly, but preparation is usually much faster.
Does HITRUST cover artificial intelligence risks?
Increasingly, yes. CSF v11.8.0 adds mappings to the OWASP Top 10 for LLM applications. HITRUST also offers a separate AI security certification for organizations that build or deploy AI systems.
