ISO 56001 Innovation Management System

ISO 56001:2024 is the first requirements standard in the ISO 56000 family, which makes it auditable. Accredited certification is a different question, and this page is candid about where that currently stands.

What ISO 56001 Is

ISO 56001:2024 is titled Innovation management system, Requirements. It was published by the International Organization for Standardization in September 2024 and is the first standard in the ISO 56000 family written as auditable requirements rather than as guidance.

The family it belongs to had until then been advisory:

  • ISO 56000:2020 covers fundamentals and vocabulary.
  • ISO 56002:2019 provides guidance on an innovation management system.
  • ISO 56003:2019 addresses tools and methods for innovation partnership.
  • ISO 56005:2020 addresses intellectual property management, and ISO 56006:2021 strategic intelligence management.
  • ISO 56007:2023 addresses managing opportunities and ideas, and ISO 56008:2024 innovation operation measurements.

The shift from ISO 56002 guidance to ISO 56001 requirements is what makes third party audit possible. It is also what makes it worth being precise about certification, because the infrastructure that supports certification takes longer to appear than the standard itself.

What the Standard Requires

ISO 56001 uses the harmonised structure common to ISO management system standards, so the shape will be familiar to anyone who has implemented ISO 9001. The content is specific to innovation:

  • Context and stakeholders. Understanding the organisation, its external environment and the interested parties relevant to innovation.
  • Leadership. An innovation vision, strategy and policy set by top management, with roles and authorities assigned, and a culture that supports the pursuit of uncertain outcomes.
  • Planning. Innovation objectives, addressing risks and opportunities, and innovation portfolios.
  • Support. People, time, funding, knowledge, intellectual property, tools and methods, and strategic intelligence. Resource commitment is where most implementations succeed or fail.
  • Operation. Innovation initiatives and the innovation processes that run them, covering identifying opportunities, creating concepts, validating concepts, developing solutions and deploying them.
  • Performance evaluation. Monitoring and measurement of innovation performance, internal audit and management review.
  • Improvement. Handling deviations, non conformities and corrective action, and continual improvement of the system.

The standard does not require innovation to succeed. It requires the organisation to manage the conditions under which innovation is attempted, and to learn from what does not work.

Certification: What Is Actually Available

ISO 56001 is written as a requirements standard, so a certification body can audit against it and issue a certificate. The honest position on accreditation is more limited.

  • Innovation management systems are not currently listed within the scopes of the International Accreditation Forum multilateral recognition arrangement, which covers standards including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO/IEC 27001, ISO 45001, ISO 37001 and ISO 37301.
  • Accredited certification therefore depends on whether an individual national accreditation body has established a programme for ISO 56001, and that varies by country.
  • Certificates issued outside such a programme are unaccredited. They can still be useful evidence for a grant application, an investor or a customer, but they should not be described as accredited.

The practical advice is short. If a certification body offers you ISO 56001 certification, ask one question in writing: which accreditation body accredits you for ISO 56001, and can you provide the scope entry. A clear answer tells you what you are buying. An evasive one tells you more.

How Univate Builds an Innovation Management System

  1. Baseline. How innovation is currently funded, decided, staffed and measured, and where ideas actually die in your organisation today.
  2. Strategy and governance. Innovation vision, policy, objectives and portfolio governance, with decision rights that are real rather than nominal.
  3. Process design. Opportunity identification, concept creation and validation, solution development and deployment, with stage decisions that permit stopping as well as continuing.
  4. Support systems. Ring fenced time and funding, intellectual property handling, strategic intelligence, partnership arrangements and competence development.
  5. Measurement and audit. Innovation performance indicators, internal audit and management review, plus certification support where a credible route exists for you.

Points Worth Being Careful About

  • Do not buy an ISO 56001 certificate without establishing its accreditation status. This is the single most common misrepresentation around this standard.
  • ISO 56002 is guidance and has never been certifiable. Any certificate claiming conformity to ISO 56002 is misconceived.
  • An innovation management system will expose whether leadership is prepared to fund uncertainty. Implementing the documentation without that commitment produces a system that audits well and changes nothing.
  • Measuring innovation by counting ideas submitted rewards volume rather than value. The standard expects performance indicators tied to innovation objectives.
  • Intellectual property decisions should be designed into the process early, not resolved after a concept has been validated with a partner.

ISO 56001 Questions We Are Asked Most Often

Is ISO 56001 certifiable?

It is written as a requirements standard, so certification bodies can and do audit against it. Whether that certification is accredited is a separate question: innovation management systems are not currently within the scopes of the International Accreditation Forum multilateral recognition arrangement, so accredited certification depends on whether an individual national accreditation body has established a programme.

When was ISO 56001 published?

September 2024. It is titled Innovation management system, Requirements, and it is the first requirements standard in the ISO 56000 family.

What is the difference between ISO 56001 and ISO 56002?

ISO 56002:2019 provides guidance on establishing an innovation management system and cannot be certified against. ISO 56001:2024 states auditable requirements, which is what makes third party audit possible.

Does ISO 56001 guarantee more innovation?

No, and it does not claim to. It requires the organisation to manage the conditions under which innovation is attempted: strategy, governance, resources, processes, measurement and learning from initiatives that do not succeed.

How does ISO 56001 fit with ISO 9001?

Both use the harmonised structure, so context, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement can be run as one integrated management system with shared internal audit and management review.
