What Is ISO 22301?
ISO 22301 is the international standard for business continuity management systems (BCMS), published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The current edition is ISO 22301:2019 (Security and resilience, Business continuity management systems, Requirements), updated by Amendment 1:2024 to address climate action. It specifies requirements to plan, establish, operate, monitor and continually improve a management system that protects against, reduces the likelihood of, and helps an organisation recover from disruptive incidents. ISO 22301 is certifiable: an accredited certification body issues a certificate that is typically valid for three years, subject to annual surveillance audits.
ISO 22301 Requirements
- Context of the organisation: interested parties, the scope of the BCMS, and legal and regulatory requirements.
- Leadership: top management commitment, a business continuity policy, and defined roles and responsibilities.
- Planning: actions to address risks and opportunities and measurable business continuity objectives.
- Support: resources, competence, awareness, communication, and documented information.
- Operation: business impact analysis (BIA), risk assessment, business continuity strategies and solutions, and business continuity plans and procedures.
- Performance evaluation: monitoring, measurement, exercising and testing, internal audit, and management review.
- Improvement: handling nonconformities, corrective action, and continual improvement of the BCMS.
