What Is ISO 45001?

ISO 45001 is the international standard for occupational health and safety (OH&S) management systems, published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The current version is ISO 45001:2018, the first international OH&S management system standard, which replaced the former OHSAS 18001. A 2024 amendment added explicit requirements on climate action. ISO 45001 sets out how an organisation identifies workplace hazards, controls OH&S risks, involves workers, and prevents work-related injury and ill health. Certification is issued by accredited certification bodies such as Bureau Veritas, SGS, TUV, BSI, and LRQA following a Stage 1 and Stage 2 audit. An ISO 45001 certificate is valid for 3 years and is maintained through annual surveillance audits.

ISO 45001 Requirements

ISO 45001:2018 follows the Annex SL high-level structure, with core requirements across clauses 4 to 10:

  • Understanding the organisation, its context, and the needs and expectations of workers and other interested parties.
  • Leadership commitment, an OH&S policy, and clearly assigned roles and responsibilities.
  • Consultation and participation of workers at all levels.
  • Hazard identification and assessment of OH&S risks and opportunities.
  • Determination of applicable legal and other requirements.
  • OH&S objectives and planning to achieve them.
  • Support through resources, competence, awareness, communication and documented information.
  • Operational planning and control, management of change, procurement and contractor control, and emergency preparedness and response.
  • Performance evaluation through monitoring, measurement, internal audit and management review.
  • Incident investigation, nonconformity, corrective action and continual improvement.
