What Is ISO 14001?
ISO 14001 is the international standard for environmental management systems (EMS), published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The current version is ISO 14001:2026, published in April 2026, which replaces ISO 14001:2015. It specifies the requirements an organisation follows to identify and control its environmental aspects, meet its compliance obligations, and improve environmental performance across its operations and value chain. Certification is issued by accredited certification bodies such as Bureau Veritas, SGS, TUV, BSI, and LRQA following a Stage 1 and Stage 2 audit. An ISO 14001 certificate is valid for 3 years and is maintained through annual surveillance audits. Organisations certified to ISO 14001:2015 move to the 2026 edition within a three year transition period.
ISO 14001 Requirements
ISO 14001:2026 is built on the Annex SL high-level structure, with core requirements spanning clauses 4 to 10:
- Understanding the organisation and its context, including environmental conditions such as climate change, pollution and biodiversity, and the needs of interested parties.
- Leadership commitment and a documented environmental policy.
- Identification of environmental aspects and impacts using a life cycle perspective.
- Compliance obligations covering applicable legal and other requirements.
- Environmental objectives, planning to achieve them, and a structured approach to managing change.
- Support through resources, competence, awareness, communication and documented information.
- Operational planning and control, including externally provided processes and emergency preparedness and response.
- Monitoring, measurement, analysis and evaluation, internal audit and management review.
- Nonconformity, corrective action and continual improvement of the EMS.
